Stegodyphus lineatus | The Incredible Velvet Spider

Meet the extraordinary Stegodyphus lineatus, a fascinating velvet spider known for its beautiful webbing, unique social behaviors, and one of the most remarkable examples of maternal devotion in the arachnid world.

Unlike jumping spiders, these little beauties spend much of their time creating intricate silk retreats and tunnels. Their soft, velvety appearance and fascinating natural behaviors make them a wonderful addition to an experienced invertebrate keeper’s collection.

What makes this species truly special?

Stegodyphus lineatus mothers demonstrate an extraordinary form of parental care. A mother protects her offspring, provides nourishment through regurgitation, and ultimately may sacrifice herself through a natural process known as matriphagy, allowing her babies to consume her body.

Our babies have an especially touching story. Their mother has remained alive and alongside her offspring even after they’ve begun feeding independently! They continue sharing her silk retreat, where she remains a source of shelter and protection.

These little ones are a beautiful reminder of just how incredible nature can be.
