Scolopendra sp “White beard”

This impressive female is approximately 8 inches long. They can grow anywhere from 8 - 12 inches. The White Beard is a stunning giant Asian centipede originating from Southeast Asia, primarily Vietnam and Thailand. This highland species requires cooler temperatures, high humidity, deep substrate, and an extremely secure enclosure.

This species is highly defensive, lightning fast, and possesses medically significant venom. She is recommended only for experienced centipede keepers. Absolutely no handling.

Care Requirements:

Temperature: Maintain between 68°F and 75°F. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 80°F can be dangerous or fatal.

Humidity: Maintain approximately 70% to 80% humidity. Keep one side of the substrate damp while allowing the opposite side to remain drier. A shallow, stable water dish should always be available.

Enclosure: A heavy duty, escape proof enclosure with a securely locking lid is required. These centipedes can squeeze through tiny openings, push against weak lids, and climb using ventilation holes or surface imperfections.

Substrate: Provide at least 3 to 4 inches of topsoil, peat moss, coco coir, or a suitable mixture. The substrate should retain moisture while maintaining a clear moisture gradient.

Furnishings: Include cork bark, leaf litter, and sphagnum moss to provide secure hiding and burrowing areas.

Feeding: Offer appropriately sized roaches, crickets, mealworms, or similar prey approximately once per week. Remove uneaten prey promptly.

Molting: Never leave live prey inside the enclosure when she is preparing to molt or has recently molted. Signs may include refusing food, becoming sluggish, or remaining buried for an extended period.

Safety: Never attempt to touch or handle this centipede. Always use long feeding tongs, secure catch cups, and extreme caution during feeding, maintenance, or rehousing. A bite may cause severe pain, swelling, fever, nausea, or other significant symptoms.
